The Trident
The Trident is a pierce weapon on a wall just outside Obmuer Temple. It has Power 8, average speed, and a backward-dash stab. At max level a piece breaks off and becomes one of the five Trident Keys. Do not sell it if you want the five-slot door.

Why it is better than the rusty spear, for a while
The Rusted Spear is the pierce weapon in the first ruined tower, and it evolves into Jigeki's Serpent Thrust. The Trident does not join that track. TechRaptor calls it a superior version of the Rusted Spear: Power 8 against the spear's 5, same average speed, a stab that steps backward. That is the early pierce slot if you have reached Obmuer's outside wall and you have not found a better point yet. It is mounted, not dropped by Dagoom, so you can take it before the temple's deeper fights.
The backward stab is one guide's move list. I do not have a second site that names the input. Treat the dash-stab as a single-source detail and the Power 8 as the part two pages agree on.
The break is the feature
People search 'break trident' because the weapon comes apart on purpose. At the cap, a fragment becomes the red key on the Trident Keys page. If you sell the weapon, evolve something else, or leave it in a chest and forget the levels, that fragment does not appear. Spirit Oil is the item discussions name for pushing levels. I still have no oil-per-level figure, so I am not writing a shopping list.
You can finish the queen without the fragment. The route guides are clear that the five-slot door and the Petrified Garden sockets are optional. Keep the Trident if those locks interest you. Spend the melee slot on Endu or a slash weapon if they do not. The mistake is deciding halfway, selling it, and then wanting the garden.

Is the Trident a key, or a weapon?
It is a weapon. One of the five keys is the piece it sheds. The other four keys are found or bought.
Does it evolve at level 10 like the spear?
No. The evolution table leaves it off the evolve list. The shed fragment is what max level does instead.
